Rio Perdido Story

The Story of Rio Perdido, as Told by Its Founders

“As native Costa Ricans and lifelong

adventurers, we were astonished to discover

the San Bernardo Lowlands — an untouched

canyonland right in our backyard that few had

seen for decades. Standing on a high peninsula

where two canyons meet, we watched the cool

Río Blanco merge with the hot mineral currents

of Rio Perdido, a convergence so rare it felt like

stepping into another world. In that moment,

we knew this land was something extraordinary.

Exploring further, we uncovered shards of

centuries-old Chorotega artifacts, revealing

that long before us, this place was a sacred

gathering site for indigenous communities.

Inspired by the land’s history and natural power,

we set out to create Rio Perdido as a haven for

restoration and renewal — a retreat space where

movement and stillness in nature combine to

ground and transform all who visit

Today, Rio Perdido is brought to life by the

people of this region. Over 90% of our staff

comes from nearby villages, from guides who

know every trail and hot spring, to chefs who

infuse local tradition into every meal, to leaders

who help shape the experience at every level.

This is more than a hotel to us. It’s our home.

We take pride in sharing its magic with retreat

leaders and their groups, ensuring that the

spirit of community and connection is woven

into your retreat experience.”
